On Saturday, September 26th at 7:00 PM EDT, the TB Percussion Studio will be hosting its 2020 Virtual Senior Spotlight Recital!  Join the event and help us celebrate our graduating seniors by visiting: facebook.com/trevorbarroero/live

Today's Senior Spotlight Interview features Henry Pattavina, a recent graduate and honors student of Clarke County High School in Athens, Georgia.  Henry first joined my studio in 2018 and is currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in Music Education, on scholarship, at the University of Georgia's Hugh Hodgson School of Music.  I had the chance to chat with Henry this past week about his experiences at UGA so far.

Check out our full conversation below!

Describe your freshman experience in college thus far.  How has COVID-19 affected your experience (positively and/or negatively)? College, especially during the pandemic, has been a huge change for me. Since we are not attending in-person class very often, there is a lot more homework given. Even though it's a lot of work, I enjoy being able to learn and work at something I love: music! COVID-19 has restricted my social life quite a bit, but it has also given me the opportunity to become more organized with my time and be more efficient. I've been able to make much more time for practice, and I've enjoyed being able to practice things that are fun and watch how it improves my playing.
List some of your most notable musical accomplishments during high school:
District Honor Band (Senior Year)
JanFest Symphonic Honor Band (Senior Year)
UGA Summer Music Institute (Junior Year)
Outstanding Senior in Music Award (Senior Year)
Drum Line Captain (Sophomore, Junior, and Senior Year)
Band Captain (Senior Year)
Drum Line's First Superior Rating/2nd in class (Sophomore Year)
First time CCHS Drum Line places 1st in class (twice) (Senior Year)

Share a brief story of one of (or some of) your favorite musical accomplishments:
My favorite musical accomplishment in high school was when the Drum Line received "Best-in-Class" distinctions at both of the competitions we attended during my senior year. The Drum Line had never been particularly bad, but had always struggled.  Coming into high school as a freshman in the marching band, I was pretty inexperienced and didn't know very much about percussion. I placed in the front ensemble during that first year and performed auxiliary instruments (mainly hi-hat and cymbals).
How did private lessons help prepare you for your future career (and post-secondary education) in music?
When I first started lessons, I wasn’t sure if I even wanted to continue with music after high school, and I also had very little instruction or experience with playing percussion. Once I started lessons, I started to see how much I didn’t know about music and how much more there was to know, and I was intrigued. Since I have started lessons, I have improved tremendously and was able to see a way that I could do something I loved for the rest of my life!
What was one of your favorite pieces that we worked on together during lessons? I really enjoyed working on The Whistler because that has been part of what set me on my path to UGA. I performed this for both an audition for the UGA Summer Music Institute and my audition for the Hugh Hodgson School of Music, as well as on various other occasions.

As of now, what is the dream job you want in the future?  I want to be a high school band director!

Please be sure to check out Henry's performance at our Virtual 2020 Senior Spotlight Recital on Saturday, September 26th at 7:00 PM EDT!!  Saturday's event will also a fundraiser for the LIFT Music Fund.  This organization provides micrograms for underrepresented music students to offset the cost of incidental music expenses.  When speaking with Henry, here are a few of the incidental expenses that he listed as part of his journey as a high school music student:

  • Variety of mallets and sticks
  • Drum pads
  • Drum stands
  • Music Stands
  • Private lesson fees
  • School Band fees
  • Marching Band Fees
  • JanFest fees
  • District Honor Band fees
  • All-state fees
  • Metronome
  • Electronic drumset
  • Keyboard + stand

Many students, due to their socioeconomic situation, do not have the means to afford these essential entry-level expenses to prepare for a post-secondary education in music!  Please consider donating to our campaign for the LIFT Music Fund's initiative by visiting: charity.gofundme.com/o/en/campaign/lift-music-fund-launch/TrevorBarroero
