Atlanta Symphony Orchestra: "Firebird Finale with Nathalie Stutzmann" | June 13, 15, and 16, 2024
8:00 PM (6/13 & 6/15) and 3:00 PM (6/16) | Woodruff Arts Center | Atlanta, GA
They call it the Belle Époque—in the early years of the 20th century, the French capital became a magnet for creatives, including Pablo Picasso, Claude Debussy, Gertrude Stein, Henri Matisse, and Marcel Proust. Steeped in that world, two friends, Igor Stravinsky and Maurice Ravel, combined lush harmonies with scintillating orchestral colors to become giants of modern music. Ravel tapped into his Spanish roots for his lusty and bombastic Alborada del gracioso, contrasted here with his delicate nod to the French Baroque. Closing the 2023/24 season, Maestro Stutzmann conducts Stravinsky’s watershed ballet, The Firebird, a titanic and lustrous dazzler in the hands of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. The program pairs these works with one of the great monuments for solo violin, the Beethoven Violin Concerto featuring the much-anticipated return of the German violin virtuoso Veronika Eberle, who wowed Atlanta audiences in 2018 with her “totally on fire” (ArtsATL) performance of Brahms. For more information and to register, visit: www.aso.org/events

Then there is Austrian HK Gruber’s eccentric and exuberant Frankenstein!! — is it musical theater, is it cabaret, or is it opera? One can never be sure. Here the text is provided by poet H. C. Artmann, whose parodies of comic book and film characters blend childlike fantasy with the macabre. For more information visit: https://www.hso.org/concerts/

Huntsville Symphony Orchestra: "CARMEN!" | September 23, 2022
7:30 PM | Mark C. Smith Concert Hall | Huntsville, AL
Composers have long been fascinated by the sea and sun of Spain and Italy, two great jewels of the western Mediterranean. Berlioz’s Harold in Italy, a symphony with solo viola, was commissioned by Paganini and inspired by Lord Byron’s Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage. Set in Seville, Carmen became the most successful French opera of the late nineteenth century, adored for the atmospheric dances which Bizet later extracted for orchestra. Even Rimsky-Korsakov, a master of the Russian school, succumbed to the charms of Iberia in his Capriccio espagnol, rooted in authentic Spanish folk melodies.
