3/21/2017

I hope to see many of you at tonight's benefit concert at 7:30 PM in Crowder Hall at The University of Arizona's Fred Fox School of Music!

If you go:  Even if you cannot donate, you are still welcome to attend tonight's concert! However, free-will donations will be collected at the door before the event and during intermission.  Morgen Hartford, Regional Director of the Southern Arizona's Alzheimer's Association, will be in attendance to collect donations and issue receipts to all donors.  Please arrive early as the lines may get long as 7:30 approaches! It is easiest to park in the "Park Avenue Garage" and to walk to the Fred Fox School of Music via the underpass that leads underneath Speedway.  (Download the map by clicking here)

If you can't go:  You can still watch tonight's event LIVE online!  The video will also be archived and available for viewing after the concert.  You are also encouraged to send in a donation online.  All online contributions go directly to the Alzheimer's Association and you will be issued a receipt via your email address.

New Posters!

A huge thank you to my wonderfully talented girlfriend, Holly Durr, for her expertise in designing all the promotional materials for today's concert!  And my friend, Alexa Nguyen, took some wonderful photos at Sunday's dress rehearsal!

Final Preparations

When searching for the perfect date for my final recital, I chose March 22nd since I knew it would be the week after my spring break.  The original plan was to dedicate the entirety of the week for final preparations and to rest a lot before the big event.

However, when the Louisiana Philharmonic invited me to come perform as extra percussionist in New Orleans for my spring break, I quickly accepted the gig and found other, more "portable" ways to practice my recital repertoire.
For example, the multiple percussion solo I will be premiering on today's recital is scored for kick drum, crotales, three bells, and a wood plank. Without access to those specific instruments, I used a xylophone for the crotales, a practice pad for the wood, three different-colored sticky notes for the bells, and stomped my foot on the carpet for the kick drum.  I am also performing a bass drum solo tonight to open the concert.  I practiced that entire solo on a regular snare drum practice pad! Check out the following video to get a quick glimpse into this unique learning process!

Recent Media Coverage

For every hour I spent in the practice room, shedding the actual notes for my recital, I probably spent an additional hour on my laptop and phone, managing the many logistical aspects of the event.  Within the past month of preparing this concert, I sent a couple hundred emails.  Although only a percentage of my inquiries received a response, I was extremely persistent and was lucky to connect with many news organizations that were extremely willing to help promote my event!

In other news...

It was an honor sharing the stage this past week with the incredible musicians of the Louisiana Philharmonic.  This was my first time to New Orleans, and I had a lot of fun exploring the city!
